OCCUPY protesters were only able to block the Port of Oakland Monday while operations of all 14 terminals of Los Angeles-Long Beach ports remained normal.
About 1,000 protestors formed into two large groups marched in circles at the two main truck entrances of the Port of Oakland, reported Newark's Journal of Commerce, adding that they were able to block traffic and cause a long queue of trucks, effectively stopping cargo operations within several terminals.
The Port of Oakland said in a statement at mid-day the TRAPAC, TTI and SSA/OICT terminals had decided to close for the day. But the management said though the gate at Ports America was shut down, they would still handle cargo if police could clear the protesters from the entrance.
"The APL and Matson terminals were fully operational", the port said.
For the 14 terminals at the Los Angeles-Long Beach port area, only Long Beach's Pacific Container Terminal (PCT) operated by SSA Marine encountered demonstration because the Occupy movement said Goldman Sachs is an investor in SSA Marine.
But the Occupy movement failed to paralyse operations of PCT as the longshoremen were able to access the terminal through the north gate while protestors flocked to the south gate.
American Shipper reported that the Port of Oakland had activated its emergency operations centre (EOC) and has integrated its work with the city's EOC.
"We are in close contact with our terminal operators, shipping companies, labour partners and community. At this point, maritime operations continue at the port with sporadic disruptions for truckers trying to enter and exit marine terminal gates," the port said.
"West Coast Port Shut Down" specifically aims to disrupt business-as-usual for "Wall Street on the Waterfront," said a press release from Occupy Portland. |
